Finally, place a link for the page of content and include it on the profile page. To add the link to the profile, sign in to Google and click on Edit Profile. Then click on Contributor To and select Add Custom Link. Change the visibility of the link, if desired, and click on Save. This must all be properly done and include all parts written correctly or the content and profile will not be associated.

Put yourself in the perspective of potential visitors and ask yourself what you would expect to find in such a blog. Offer quality content and ensure the design is elegant.   2. Ping your blog. This will notify the search engines that your blog has been updated. In your WordPress blog’s settings, set up automatic pinging. How To Create Your Own Blog

Creating a blog is easy and you can use a blog as a marketing tool for your business or even personal brand. When I started blogging, I wanted to share my passion for my business and expose people to my brand. It is important that you blog about something that you are passionate about so that you are able to update your blog regularly so that you can keep your readers interested and keep coming back for more.

When setting up my blog the first thing I thought about was the name of the blog. I wanted it to be catchy and interesting yet it gave people an idea of what the blog was about. I also chose a name that when people type in the subject matter contained in my blog in search engines, then my blog would come up. This is especially important since one of the uses of my blog is to market my brand. The best kind of name is one that is short and if possible, descriptive since this is easier for people to remember as compared to a long name.

I chose to use my own domain for my blog because I really wanted to take ownership of all of my content and the upkeep for my blog. Domain names are those that end with .com, .org, .net, etc. Blogging platforms such as WordPress will enable you to get all the blogging software you need and you can use a domain name. For free blogging services such as blogger, you cannot get a domain name instead you get your blogname.blogspot.com. The main disadvantage of this is that if you would like to move the content of your blogspot.com to a domain name blog, it can prove to be a rather difficult process. However, the people who use this type of blogging service find it easy to set up and use and it is free.

Next, you’re going to need a web host. There are some options for hosts such as Dreamhost, BlueHost, GoDaddy, 1and1, HostGator and Namecheap. All these have various features and have different charges so it may be best to do some research. I often use Namecheap for both my domain registration and hosting. It’s just easier to have the same company do both. It is important to use a hosting service that is reliable and one that is not constantly down since you will not be able to build and maintain a reader base with a blog that is constantly unavailable. and I’ve never had an issue with Namecheap though their hosting service is relatively new. Hostgator is my second option for hosting. I’ve been using them for years without issue.

Once I had my domain registered, and my hosting set up, I opted to use WordPress as my blogging software. It is free, widely used, and well supported. Most hosts have 1-click install set up for WordPress though some sort of installation software that you can find in your cPanel. The most common of these installation programs is Fantastico, though there are others.

What is the Best Blog Site?

Many new bloggers wonder what the best blog site is.  That is a pretty broad category though, so we’re going to have to break it up into 2 parts.  The first part we’ll talk about the best blog hosting site, or sites rather, and then we’ll talk about about a couple of the best sites to learn about blogging.

The two biggest free blog hosting sites are the well known Blogger and WordPress.com.  They have their differences of course, but their offerings are pretty analogous.  CHoosing which site to go with becomes a matter of personal taste.  Some people (mistakenly) assume that because Google owns Blogger, that they’re site will get more “Google love” and maybe avoid the Google sandbox, but that is entirely unfounded.  From my experience, and the experience of other bloggers I’ve spoken with, Google treats both free blog sites the same; so which of these two is the best free blog site?  Personally, I’d go with WordPress.com.  This is mostly from the perspective of someone who hosts his own blogs, all of which are WordPress blogs.  Sure, you don’t want to spend the money now to launch your blog, but what if you decide to go self-hosted in the future?  If you start with Blogger, you’re going to have to learn a whole new interface when you switch to your own hosting because you’re going to go with WordPress on your own domain.  But doesn’t Blogger have a self-hosted blog solution?  Yes, and it sucks.  Don’t even bother with it.  Right now, WordPress is the easiest, and best solution, so if you must go with a free blog host, use WordPress.com.  Really though, if you’re serious about this whole blogging thing you should think of a super clever domain name (You know, like Uberblogger), pony up the dough, and get some hosting, and start taking your blogging endeavors a little more seriously.  (FYI – that is an affiliate link to Host Gator.  I host a ton of blogs with them, and have never had a huge problem.  They’re also quite cheap, so get on it.)

Now, what is the best blog site to use as far as learning is concerned. Well, if it were a couple years in the future, I’d say “UberBlogger.net,” but as of right now, the content is a bit sparse, and I plan on spending the next little while targeting keywords and providing relevant and quality content according to those keywords, which means according to needs of searchers and the search engines. If/when I start getting readers and users, I will cater more towards them. Or maybe I’ll just get bored with “blogging about blogging” find out it’s not a lucrative angle in this business, and sell the site off to some hopeful blogging dreamer. Since this blog here isn’t quite the extensive resource it may some day be, your choices boil down to a couple different camps. If you want to learn how to write happy slappy posts like that all start with “5 Ways To…”, you’ll be looking at ProBlogger, CopyBlogger, etc. However, if you’re looking to make money blogging, or make money online, follow those two links and not only read their content, but observe how they operate.  Depending on which direction you want to go in, or perhaps you want to mix them both, you’ll want to see who they link out to and interact with, because they are likely going to provide you with relevant information that aligns with what you’re searching for; that’s kind of how the interwebs work.

All right, so there you have it; the best site to start a blog is WordPress as far as I’m concerned.  And your concerns, I assume, are aligned with mine, otherwise you wouldn’t still be reading.  So go and start your free blog (cheap bastard) or start a self-hosted blog (using Host Gator, of course, mostly because I needs to get paid), but either way, use good ole’ WordPress.  We’ve covered a few of the best blog sites that you might want to take a look at if you’re just starting out, all of which are educational in their own way, depending on which angle you’re approaching this whole blogging thing.  That being said, why are you still here?  Go, build, learn, blog.


How to Get Paid to Blog

The dream of many bloggers is to eventually figure out how to get paid to blog.  Some people have the patience to wait a year or two for their blogs to gain steam, so that they can monetize their property, and others need the immediate gratification of money in the bank.  Really crafty writers and bloggers will combine the two methods, using the money gained from freelance blogging and writing to fund their own online properties.

There are many ways to get paid blogging directly without waiting for your own blog to get legs.  Unfortunately, while there are many legitimate freelance blogging jobs available, there are equally as many scams.  Some of the more well-known “get paid to write” type sites out there are Demands Studios, TextBroker, and eLance.  These are all legitimate places where you can start to get paid to blog online.  While not technically “blogs” the websites catered to by Demand Studios include eHow, LiveStrong, Trails.com, and others.  They pay anywhere from $3 to $20 or more per article, there is no shortage of articles to write, and they pay out twice a week.  Because of their high payout, and high quality standard, they have the highest minimum requirements of any place I’ve found online, and include having a bachelor’s degree.  TextBroker is less stringent with their requirements.  You must write a sample article, and if it’s good enough, you’re in.  This is way of getting paid to blog where you’re essentially providing uncredited work for other people’s blogs.  Bloggers out there who have many blogs, and require tons of content, will outsource this content creation to places like text broker.  They price per word, and they charge anywhere from .01 to .067 per article, and the write gets a majority of that.  Finally, eLance is a freelancing job website where you can either post your skills as a job seeker, or browse the jobs available and apply to the ones that appeal to you.  Again, this is a way to make money blogging for other people.  Many of the people who post there are in the process of developing their own web properties and are seeking cheap writers.  Aside from the blog posts, there are other writing jobs available, and various other types of online jobs including coding, and being a virtual assistant.  These aren’t the only legitimate places to get paid to write online, but it’s a good bunch of places to get started.

One of the scams you need to look out for isn’t a scam, but really isn’t worth your time.  Let’s say you’ve established a nice little blog, and you haven’t quite started making money with it yet, so you Googling around for ways to get paid for you blog.  You’re likely to come across many sites that will pay you to review some product.  These are becoming less prominent, but a couple years ago, this was all the rage.  The thing is, what these “paid to review” websites often don’t disclose is that their main purpose for paying for you to post a review on your blog is to get a backlink.  It really has nothing to do with what you say about their product or how you say it.  If you start to gain pagerank, some of these companies might even approach you to do this.  If they do, tell them to shove off.  Why?  Google hates paid links, and these pay reviews are merely a vaguely cloaked way to pay you for backlinks.  Google is well aware of this, and will slap you with a reduction in pagerank, if not deindex you entirely for engaging in this activity.  Even if your blog isn’t that big yet, it’s really not worth losing what you’ve built for a couple of dollars up front.  Just don’t do it.

Finally, you probably know all of the ways to monetize your blog.  Adsense, Chitika, and other advertising is one way many people try to make money blogging.  You can also create your own product related to your chosen niche, or industry and sell that through your blog.  The trick is to generate website traffic so this is actually a worthwhile pursuit.  Traffic takes a long time to build up, and we’ve talked about some of the ways to get this traffic before.  The best traffic for monetization, in my opinion, is search engine traffic.  Increasing your search engine traffic requires a number of things, one of which is age in Google.  What a lot of bloggers don’t understand, is that they can write great content, and they can even do the research involved in picking the right blog topics that’ll pull in search engine traffic, but it will be 9 months to a year before that post, or anything on their blog begins to gain traction in Google.  That is why buying aged domains is the hot ticket right now.  If you can buy a blog that has a Pagerank of 0, but has been in Google’s index for 12 months or more, you can start posting, and those posts will have almost immediate weight in the SERPS.  “Age in Google” refers to how long it’s been in Google’s index, not just how long the domain has had a website on it.  This age has quite an effect on several things, including how quickly your new posts get indexed, and their initial position in Google’s index.  It requires much less work to get a new post on an old website climbing the rankings into a solid position than it does to get any post ranking anywhere for a new domain.   Anyway, the point here is that after 9 months to a year, you will start seeing traffic coming to your blog, and that traffic can be monetized.  If you spend your first year worrying about writing the right type of posts to pull in searchers, then you’re sure to be able to make money with your blog.

There are many ways to get paid to blog, and this list is far from exhaustive.  If you really want to build an income stream for the long-run, write posts for your own blog, and wait that year for the momentum to build.  If you need to get paid immediately there are ways to do that too, but the way to become a real uber blogger is develop your own online properties.  If you need the cash now, combine working for others with your own blogging on your own sites.  This is a great way to ensure you’re getting income, as well as providing yourself with solid internet real estate that you can profit from indefinitely.


Blogging for Dummies

Blogging for dummies is much different from the blogging that is generally considered a very sophisticated activity.  I mean,  real blogging requires little-to-no initial capital investment, and the same goes for expertise.  As a matter of fact, all you really need to blog is eyes, and a couple of fingers, and a crafty blogger will even make due without those.  Given these high barriers of entry, most of the information available is just too far above the average dummy’s head.  That being the case, here’s some dumbed down tips so that you too can be a blogger.

First of all, acquire the book by the same name as this post.  You know anything labeled “for dummies” has to be a vast resource of information.  Blogging for Dummies?  Why not?  Hot Air Ballooning for Dummies?  Don’t mind if I do!  Transformer Collecting for Dummies?  Well… we don’t joke about collecting Transformers around these parts.  That’s the sort of thing best left to the experts.

Anyway, back to blogs for dummies.  So you’ve got your book, but you’ve only just begun your education.  You need to spend the next year or so of your life and countless thousands of dollars and hours buying and reading everything written in the “blogging about blogging” realm.  Rather than taking any actual action, you just read and read and buy and read until you feel you’ve received enough useful information to start a blog.

At this point you’ll be suffering from what’s called “information overload.”  Lucky for you, there are many bloggers out there who are willing to simplify things for you specifically as your personal mentor, for the right price of course.  They will mentor you on how to start a blog while charging you the perfectly reasonable price of $150 an hour, because you know what, they’re worth it.  They value their precious time, and damn it, you should too.  During your consultation session, you’ll be guided through such useful topics as “how to set up a free blog on platforms that are completely self explanatory” and they might give you suggestions for blog topics you should write about that they think would be really cool to read no someone else’s blog, but which will never bring any traffic or interest to your blog.  If you’re really lucky, they might even offer to click 1 button for you in cPanel in order to get that blog installed, but that’ll cost extra.  Let’s face it though, if you can’t be bothered to learn how to install a WordPress blog on your own, you probably deserve to be completely fleeced by some supposed guru.

I know what you’re thinking “Wow, Ulysses, you seem to know quite about about how to blog for dummies.  It sounds like you’ve been burned before.”  Of course I have.  You don’t make it very long in this business without trying a product or two.  I learn faster than most though, and mostly I’ve been sitting on the sidelines watching this perpetual wave of newcomers just buying product after product, while those who catch on turn around and add to the pile of flogging B.S.  Why don’t I turn around and do the same?  Laziness, I guess.  I can’t be bothered to write an eBook or build a product, let alone sell it to a bunch of unsuspecting noobs.  It’s much easier to figure out what type of questions people are asking the search engines, and then answer those questions better, and more thoroughly than anyone else.  I can write a post, forget about it, and it will start making me money in 6 months to a year and then continue to do so indefinitely.  Easy money.  I don’t have to worry about customers, returns, complaints, affiliate programs (from the production side), or any of that.  Just publish, rinse, repeat.

So, I guess despite all of my sarcasm, my route is really blogging for dummies.  It’s based on brute force, and quantity (and sometimes quality).  Let all those high-brow marketers deal with whiney customers, glad-handing other marketing douches, and hanging out at blogging and marketing conferences.  I’m way too stupid for such things.  I’ll just stick it out here in the trenches with the rest of the blogging dummies.


Blog Topics That Will Make You Money

I suppose I could write a list of blog topics that I wish somebody out there would write, but I don’t read blogs, so the list would be very short. Non-existent even. What you write your blog or your posts about makes no never-mind to me. You want people to find your blog though, right? And maybe you’ve slapped some Adsense on your blog in the hopes of making money. Further, if you’re new to this whole blogging thing you probably don’t have a whole heck of a lot of authority, so you don’t want stiff competition when it comes to getting your content ranked.

I suppose this is where I steer you away from useful topics, and make up a bunch of random long-tail titles that will make you feel good about ranking, and provide me with less competition. Maybe you think I’m really searching for “7 Ways Your Dog Makes You Happy,” and that if, one day, I search for this article in Google, you’ll be number 1, and I’ll totally get you and identify with you, and we’ll hold hands and skip off into the sunset. Well, that’s not what I’m going to do. What I’m going to do here is provide blog topics that fall under the following 3 criteria.

  1. Have at least 1000 searchers per month (Global – exact match)
  2. Have a decent CPC (over $1.00 for the most part)
  3. Have relatively easy competition (low PR, few (or low quality) links, non-matching titles in the top 10 etc.)

The list should be full of enough different topics that you’ll be able to find at least 1 thing you can write about and have the message align with whatever your blog is about.  It’s not about pissing off or confusing your readers with off-topic content that makes money, but rather about providing information that is relevant to both your readers, searchers from Google, and advertisers.  Finding the balance between these three is the key to making money with your blog.

Here you go, 50 blog topics.  Really, it’s an alphabetical list of keyword phrases.  You’re the creative one; you come up with your own title around the phrase.

Now, why would I give away such valuable information?  Well, first of all, no one reads this blog right now (and it’s likely no one ever will).  If I want to use any of the topics above, I’ll have quite a head start before anyone stumbles upon this post.

I’m not posting these blog topic ideas to “get your creative juices flowing.”  I’m posting them to give you actionable and valuable keyword phrases to capture search traffic, and possibly get paid to blog.  If something above does indeed get your creative juices flowing, then that’s probably the topic you should run with.  Keep in mind, this isn’t just a simple process of writing a post with the title above, and doing nothing.  While time will eventually pull that post into a decent position in the SERPS, you’re going to have to do some basic SEO, like URL structuring and making the title tag match the phrase (Thesis helps a lot with that, or you can use the All in One SEO plugin).  Beyond that, you’re also going to have to work on getting backlinks, whether you write some articles in common article directories that allow dofollow links, or you pitch the article to your blogging comrades.  Getting backlinks will help you rank higher in the SERPS.

If you don’t feel you can write about any of the blog topics above, then do the research yourself.  It’s not particularly difficult.  Go to the Google Adwords keyword tool, type in words or phrases related to your topic of choice.  Switch the settings to “exact” match, rather than broad, and use the pulldown to “show Estimated Avg. CPC.” Write down the keywords that have a volume over 1000 and CPC over $1.00.  From there, analyze your competition.  Use a site analyzer (like the SEO Quake Firefox plugin) and eliminate words that have sites with PR5 or higher in the top 3, or a lot of PR3 and 4 sites in the top 10.  Even still, if their titles aren’t exactly matched to the keyword you’re targeting you can probably still beat them with some work (if their’s is plural, and your target is singular, that’s fair game – those are two different keywords as far as Google is concerned).  Don’t worry about how many backlinks they have, because you can always get more eventually, and quantity isn’t as important as quality.

Generate Website Traffic Using SEO

Ah, the holy grail; how to generate website traffic using SEO.  If you are in this whole website business for money, rather than fame, then this is probably the most valuable way to gain traffic.  If you’re “lucky,” you may even pick up a fan or two along the way, and get that fame and fortune you’ve been secretly seeking.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, and it’s the process of optimizing your website in order to climb the SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages).  The idea is to get to the top for whatever keyword your website is about.  If your website is about “widgets,” you want to be the first result when people search for “widgets” in Google or any other search engine.  It’s also important to get to the top of the SERPS for related terms like “how to store your widget,” and “where to get widgets.”  Those two related terms are the type of terms that make search engine traffic so valuable.

Those two terms would be the queries of someone looking for information, and possibly to purchase that information, or a product. If you sell widgets and you’re the first result for “where to get widgets,” where do you think it’s likely they’ll get a widget?  That’s right, your site.  If you are simply a fan of widgets, then you could give them more information about widgets, possibly helping them decide exactly what type of widget they need. After reading your article, they’ve decided “blue widgets” are what they need, they see the “blue widget” advertisement on your website, they click away, and you get paid.

Learning how to generate traffic using SEO is also valuable because it’s free.  Not only is it free, but it’s time consuming and difficult.  This gives it a high barrier of entry.  Most people who attempt SEO give up, and default to other methods that are easier and more expensive.  Those methods are fleeting though, whether they’re paying for ads, or links, because the ads go away as soon as you stop paying.  And the links, if they’re discovered by Google (and they will be, they’re smart fellers over there), will get your site buried in the SERPS, if not deindexed entirely.   In the end, it’s hard work that will pay off in the form of long-term results.
